Today we’re talking about one of the neat ways that Five can add a little extra oomph to your custom team kit - split fountain printing!
Split Fountain is a screen printing technique that allows us to create designs in a blend of two or more different colored inks. For a refresher on screen printing take a look at our comprehensive guide on printing techniques.
Generally when we create screen printed jerseys with multiple colors, we use a different screen for each unique color, so colors are distinct and separate. With Split Fountain printing, we physically run two (or three! Or FOUR!) colors through a single screen, which creates a smooth blend of all of the colors.
Featured in our vid is artwork from Ithaca College Kweezy Ultimate, who put together this subtle yet effective design using a yellow-orange and deep orange. Simple, stylish, classy.
GETTING THE MOST OUT OF SPLIT FOUNTAIN PRINTING
When taking advantage of Split Fountain choose colors that are adjacent to each other on the color wheel - this creates a nice, gradual transition between colors, rather than a muddy grey (remember your rainbow: ROYGBIV!). For a prime example check out our tourney swag from Sunbreak this past summer. We think the blend of rich colors really captures the majesty of the Pacific Northwest.
You can see the ink runs from a true blue, to indigo, magenta, and finally through to a hot, vibrant salmon pink at the peak of that beautiful sunrise. Don’t be afraid to add more color - each additional ink is only $1 more per piece!
